Response to Instruction & Intervention (RtI 2 ) Using Differentiation to Provide Equity and Access for All Students

Learning Outcomes  Participants will hear real life examples of how RtI is being implemented at the Elementary and Secondary Level.  Participants will create their own Pyramid Response to intervention utilizing all the resources they have gathered throughout this professional development series.

Our Beliefs  RtI 2 is not a program, but a process and framework for consolidating and using your existing resources wisely  RtI 2 is designed to assure high levels of learning for all students

Essential Characteristics of RtI  Collective responsibility  Quality core instruction  Universal screening and diagnostic assessment  Research-based supplemental services and interventions  Progress monitoring – Use of data to make instructional and intervention decisions  Quality problem solving  Guaranteed access for all students (

IEPs & Marathon Meetings SSTs, & Marathon Meetings PLCs/Data Teams, Grade Level/Dept. Teams, & Marathon Meetings Progress Monitoring happens at each tier! PBIS: Family Support Teams

It All Begins in the Classroom  If we truly believe that all kids can learn: How will we know when students have learned? How will we respond when they don’t? How will we respond when they already know it?

What do we want all students to learn? Essential Standards Lesson How will we know when each student has mastered the essential learning? SMART Goals Common Assessments Data Analysis Plan How will we respond when a student experiences initial difficulty in learning? How will we deepen learning for students who have already mastered essential knowledge and skills? Whole Class, Small Group Instruction, Reteach Enrichment

Creating Your Own Pyramid of Interventions

Universal Screening  What universal screening tools will be used to assess all students in reading, writing and math?  Who will administer the assessment?  When will the assessment be administered?

Tier 1 Core Program  What research-based instructional practices/programs will be used in your Tier 1 core program?  How will Tier 1 instruction be differentiated to meet the individual needs of students?  What formative common assessments will be used to measure student progress during core instruction?

Student Identification Process and Progress Monitoring  How will students be identified for supplemental interventions?  What criteria will be used to place students in appropriate intervention?  Who will place students in interventions? How often?  How will student progress be monitored?  By whom?

Tier 2 Supplemental Interventions  What interventions will be provided to intentional nonlearners and failed learners who did not demonstrate mastery after Tier 1 core instructions?  What assessment(s) will be used to monitor student progress in each intervention?  What research-based instructional practices will be used for failed learners ?

Tier 3 Intensive Interventions  What interventions will be provided to intentional nonlearners and failed learners who did not demonstrate mastery after Tier 2 supplemental interventions?  Who will teach the interventions?  When will the interventions be offered?  What assessment(s) will be used to monitor student progress in each intervention?  What research-based instructional practices will be used for failed learners?

Progress – Monitoring and Decision Protocols  How will students be identified for intensive interventions?  What criteria will be used to place students in the appropriate interventions?  Who will place students in interventions? How often?  How will student progress be monitored? By whom?

Decision Protocol  How will students be identified for special education testing?  What criteria and assessment data will be used to make this determination?  Who will make this decision?

Pulling it All Together!!  What are we able to apply from our learnings?
