 What is a short story?  Have you read any before?  What can you remember about them? What Are They?

  Short Story: a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel.  As Edgar Allan Poe stated, short stories “are to be enjoyed in one sitting.” Official Definition…

  Short stories have been around for centuries – they were just never categorized as a short story.  Fairy tales and fables are technically short stories.  Famous collections from medieval times are Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Boccaccio’s Decameron. History of the Short Story:

  The term “short story” first emerged in the 19 th century.  It was considered to be a new literary art form – all the conflict, theme, and resolution of a novel, yet significantly shorter. History of the Short Story Continued:

  Edgar Allan Poe is commonly considered to be the “Father of the Short Story.”  His stories were suspenseful, grotesque, and, of course, short.  Famous Poe short stories: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of Red Death. History

  Short stories were commonly released in magazines.  This was more convenient than releasing novels chapter by chapter, as you could have the whole thing done at once.  Poe’s success in publishing launched several magazines all dedicated to showcasing the short story. Where Could You Find It?

 Climax Rising Action Falling Action Exposition Resolution The Novel Pattern:
