What stance did America originally take during WWI? Why? What measures did the U.S. take to prepare for their late arrival in the war?

Selective Service Act May 18, 1917 Congress passed this act which required men between the ages of 21 and 30 to register to be drafted in to the armed forces Today: All men must register for the draft

Draft Today If draft occurred: Random Lottery based on year of birth Then, physical and mental examination before chosen Penalty for not registering: $250,000 and/or 5 years in prison

Any way out? Conscientious Objectors: members of a certain religious beliefs prevented them from fighting in the war If accepted, served in non-combat roles such as ambulance drivers
