 Adeline Virginia Stephen is born. She is the third of four children born to Julia Prinsep Stephen and her husband Leslie. She also has four half-siblings from her parents' previous marriages. Virginia's parents are fixtures on the London literary and intellectual scene and she grows up in a home full of books.

 1891: Sister Laura, institutionalized  1895: Mother dies; begins first depression  1897: Sister Stella dies  1904: Father dies; tries to commit suicide  1906: Brother Thoby dies  1934: Brother Howard dies  1937: Nephew dies  March 28, 1941 Commits Suicide

 “Dearest, I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times. And I shan't recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do. You have given me the greatest possible happiness. You have been in every way all that anyone could be.  1922: Virginia Woolf publishes Jacob's Room, a novel based on her brother Thoby's death. In this same year she meets Vita Sackville-West, a married writer. The two women begin a love affair—with Leonard Woolf's knowledge and permission—that lasts through the 1920s. After their romantic relationship ends, they remain close friends until Woolf's death.  Much of her works have lesbian and feminist themes to them.  Today much of Woolf’s focus in study is on those themes.
