“Memory lapse putting fear in athletes”

It can happen to anybody -- forgetting your glasses are on the top of your head, or not remembering a loved one's birthday after celebrating it for decades. Most of us simply laugh off these short memory lapses. But for athletes memory lapses can be a scary thing. They can be a sign of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a disease that has been found in the brains of many athletes who suffered repeated hits to the head during their career. Scientists are working to identify some common symptoms of the brain disease in living players, but right now the only way to diagnose CTE is after death -- by analyzing brain tissue and finding microscopic clumps of an abnormal protein called tau.

Toyota has agreed to pay the driver and the survivors of a passenger in a Camry involved in a 2007 crash the driver claimed was caused by the car accelerating on its own. The settlement was reached the day after a $3 million jury verdict that was the first court loss for Toyota in an unintended acceleration case. On Thursday, the Oklahoma City jury awarded $1.5 million each to the injured woman and the survivors of the woman who was killed. He filed a complaint, saying the winning team's coaches should have told their team to take it easy on the other players.
