African American women are portrayed negatively in media. By Cheryl price Professor Boone class

Are African American women Really portrayed negatively in media? Is It because of how African American women dance? Or Is it because of how media emphasize and manipulate African American Women situations?

What you can gain from this presentation. The purpose of this lecture is to inform you the negative impact media has on portraying African American women. You will gain a clear understanding as to why African American women are portrayed this way.

What they are known for? “Essence surveyed 1,200 women about the images of black women in media and found that respondents felt the images were "overwhelmingly negative," falling typically into categories including: “Gold Diggers, Modern Jezebels, Baby Mamas, Uneducated Sisters, Ratchet Women, Angry Black Women, Mean Black Girls, Unhealthy Black Women, and Black Barbie's.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN9wwlT4Gvo

The way African American feel inferior? Dr. Francis Cress-Welsing is a well-known psychiatrist who provides insights into the processes by which African Americans are made to feel inferior. According to Dr. Cress- Welsing (1991) these include cultural beliefs such as women and Blacks being inferior, Media images which suggest that the closer to White skin and hair texture, the more attractive one is, and education and miseducation in the school systems which train youth to believe that there are no significant Black contributions to religion, technology, art, and other aspects of civilization.

Conclusion Media does emphasize and manipulate African American women to make them look bad.
