What do you think our topic is this lesson? Clue: Think newspaper headlines.

Max George made newspaper headlines over ‘sexting’ allegations. But what is ‘sexting’? Write down what you think it means on your post it note.

Sexting and Sexual Bullying Lesson 8 LO: to evaluate the consequences of sexting and sexual bullying.

Sexting What is it? naked pictures or 'nudes' 'underwear shots' sexual or 'dirty pics' rude text messages or videos Some "sexts" have ended up on forums used by child sex offenders. One in four 11 to 18- year-olds have received a "sext" by phone or , according to charity Beatbullying. Helen Penn, from Ceop, said police were becoming increasingly worried about "people losing control of these photos". "We are getting more reports of teenagers being bullied, called names and strung up in front of their whole school," she said.

Why do people send sexts?

Sexting can happen for lots of reasons... You might: feel like 'everyone else is doing it' and want to fit in with in with friends - especially if they are boasting about sending or having photos on their mobile phone'everyone else is doing it' worry about being seen as 'not sexy', 'frigid' or 'shy' and go along with things you're uncomfortable with feel under pressure to sext as a way of ‘proving’ your sexualitysexuality feel harassed, threatened or blackmailed into sending pictures feel it's easier just to ‘give in’ to somebody who keeps asking for things think you ‘owe’ your boyfriend or girlfriend or made to feel guilty if you don’t do what they ask you formade to feel guilty be in love with the person and trust them completely and feel like it’s OK be in love with the person have a long distance or online relationship with someone and want to have a sexual relationship with themwant to have a sexual relationship feel proud of your body and want to share it with other people.

An Example

Sexting and the Law Prosecutions In theory, teenagers could be arrested for taking naked photos of themselves or their boyfriends or girlfriends. Although it is legal to have sex at 16 under British law, it is illegal to take, hold or share "indecent" photos of anyone under 18. Helen Penn said in practice it is unlikely the British police would get involved in a consensual case of "sexting" because it would not be in the public interest, although there have been a number of charges brought in both Australia and the US. But if grooming or sexual abuse of a minor was discovered, there would probably be a prosecution. "When the police look at this kind of offence, they are going to take it in context. "So if it is two 17-year-olds and they are in a consensual relationship, they will probably not prosecute those people. "But it will look at people that sent on these images and hold lots of them for ill intent.”
