The Parthenon The Parthenon is a former Greek temple which was dedicated to the Goddess Athena The temple began construction in 447 BC, and the temple wasn’t totally finished until 432 BC It was built to replace an older temple, which was destroyed in an invasion by the Persians in 480 BC Although it was built as a temple to honour Greek Goddess Athena, the building’s main use was a treasury It has had many different uses over the years, starting with being a treasury and temple, but it was turned to a Christian Church around the 6 th Century AD, and then to an Islamic Mosque after the Ottoman Invasion in It is currently just a tourist attraction. It is the most historically significant surviving building of Classical Greece, so it is very popular with tourists.
