过年 -- 春节 - Spring Fest.

What is the Zodiac year in 2016?

How long is the history of people’s celebration of Spring Festival in China? From 1,600 BC. New Year Day was celebrated by the emperors, praying that heaven and earth be in harmony and thanking the god to bring the harvest to the earth.

Why do Chinese people call Celebrating Chinese Traditional New Year or Spring Festival “ 过年 ” GuoNian? Nian who was a monster with a body of a bull and the head of a lion. It was a ferocious animal that lived in the mountains and hunted for a living. Towards the end of winter when there was nothing to eat. Nian would attack villages and eat livestock and even human, which made a big terror for the villagers. Later on the villagers realized that Nian was afraid of 3 things: color scarlet, fire and noise. So one night when Nian was coming down from the mountain, the villagers started the fire, put up the red board and stayed up all night long making noises. From then on Nian never returned any more.
