EXAMPLE 1 Writing and Solving a Multi-Step Equation For a science fair, you perform an experiment to see how the number of Venus flytrap seeds planted in a cup affects plant growth. In each cup, you plant either 5 seeds or 10 seeds. You want to use an equal number of cups for each seed amount. You have 75 seeds. How many cups do you need? You can use an equation to solve this problem. Science

EXAMPLE 1 Writing and Solving a Multi-Step Equation To find the number of cups for each seed amount, first write a verbal model. Let c represent the number of cups for each seed amount. = + 5c + 10c = 75 Write algebraic model. 15c = 75 Combine like terms. Divide each side by 15. c = 5 Simplify. 15c = You can plant five cups with 5 seeds and five cups with 10 seeds. ANSWER

GUIDED PRACTICE for Example 1 A pack of petunia seeds costs $3 and a pack of balloon flower seeds costs $4. You buy the same number of packs of each type of flower and pay $42. How many packs of each do you buy? Flowers 1. You buy 6 packs of each type of flower. ANSWER
