Chapter 1 Lesson 4 Graphs Questions to think about: What kind of data do line graphs display? Why are line graphs powerful tools?

Key Vocabulary Graph Linear Graph Nonlinear Graph

Line Graphs One type of data display is a graph. Graphs organize data into a picture that can be analyzed. One kind of graph is a line graph Line graphs display data that show how one variable changes in response to another variable. Line graphs are useful for recording the results of many experiments

Line Graphs in Experiments In experiments scientists make changes to one variable, and it is called the manipulated variable. The data they collect show how a second variable responded to these changes. A line graph is used when a manipulated variable is continuous. A continuous variable has other points between the tested points. Temperature and time are examples of continuous variables. A line graph would allow a scientist to see how their data changed over time.

Lets apply what we just learned Quietly and independently answer the following question, and then we will discuss as a class. Now I know that line graphs display data that show _____________________________________ _____________________________________ ____

ANSWER Line graphs display data that show one variable changing in response to controlled changes to another variable.

Why are line graphs powerful tools? A line graph in which the data points from a straight line is a linear graph. A line graph in which the data points do not fall along a straight line is called a non-linear graph. Line graphs are powerful tools in science because they allow you to identify trends and make predictions about those trends. Both Linear and non linear graphs can show trends. You can use lines on those graphs to predict the values of points that you have not measured.

Lets give it a try Get with a partner and answer the following questions, we will discuss as a class (only one student needs to write it down): #1: Why is it often possible to make predictions from data in a line graph? #2: Why are graphs powerful tools? #3: What is the difference between a linear and non linear line graph?

Answers #1: Because line graphs allow you to identify trends and make predictions based on the trends #2: Line graphs are powerful tools in science because they allow you to identify trends and make predictions about those trends. #3: A line graph in which the data points from a straight line is a linear graph. A line graph in which the data points do not fall along a straight line is called a non-linear graph.
