New Curriculum 2015 New curriculum introduced with the aim to raise standards in Primary Schools. Children experienced the new curriculum when they were in Year 5. May 2016 will be the first time that the new curriculum will be assessed. The SATs have changed too!

SATS 2016 Week beginning Monday 9 th May 2016 To be tested in May 2016: Reading Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) Maths Writing: independent writing will happen regularly during the year and will be used as evidence for Teacher Assessment – no formal test. Science: Either teacher assessed OR sampled.

The New SATs The tests for Reading, SPAG & Maths are set and marked externally (as before) They will be more rigorous (!) National curriculum levels have now been scrapped No separate Level 6 papers A new marking scheme will be used for the first time Raw score – the actual number of marks the child achieves in their test. Scaled score – out of 100. This will be used to gauge whether the child has reached the national average (which has yet to be announced).

Reading Single paper; 50 marks One hour to read a booklet and to answer questions Three passages of text Questions and texts are roughly in order of difficulty Types of question: Rank/ordering Labelling Find and copy Short answers Longer answers and explanations

SPAG Paper 1 – 45 minutes. Short questions & answers about word classes, verb tenses, the use of punctuation etc. A reading exercise with SPAG related questions. A spelling test – 20 words taken from the Key Stage Two curriculum.

Maths Three papers: Paper 1 – arithmetic; 30 minutes Paper s 2 & 3 – reasoning and the application of maths; 40 minutes each Papers 2 and 3 test fluency, reasoning and problem solving; no calculators There is no timed mental maths paper any more but we will still practise them to help with paper 1 of the new test, which requires speed!

Science Christ Church was last selected for sampling in 2014 If selected, there will be three papers: Biology: 25 minutes; 22 marks Chemistry: 25 minutes; 22 marks Physics: 25 minutes; 22 marks If not selected, science will be teacher assessed

Results The Reading, SPAG and Maths papers are sent away to be marked independently Writing is Teacher Assessed but there is a chance the school may be moderated Results are usually included in the same envelope as the end of year school report; Friday 8 th July Remember: no levels or separate Level 6 tests anymore!

Preparing The Children Booster Classes Weekly (usually Thursday) Eight school weeks before SATs week Short break at the end of the school day for a drink and a biscuit An extra hour of teaching Ends at 4:45
