Chapter 3 - Field Books1 Chapter 3 Field Books What are the requirements for field books used to record final measurements?

Chapter 3 - Field Books2 Field Books Field books are source documents. There may be times when these records will be utilized by people with little field experience. It is important when preparing records to assume that all persons who will use the notes have no familiarity at all with the work you are recording.

Chapter 3 - Field Books3 Field Books Only bound field books, similar to the Dietzgen No will be used.

Chapter 3 - Field Books4 Front Cover Information The front cover of each field book shall be identified with bold letters in permanent ink with the following information: Federal Aid Job No. Financial Project ID. Contract No. Field Book No. State Road No. General Contents

Chapter 3 - Field Books BINDER INFORMATION The binder of each book shall be identified in permanent ink with: The Field Book No. The Financial Project ID.

Chapter 3 - Field Books6 Field Book The contents shall be clearly indexed on the first lined page. Index Page Subsoil 1-20 Sod First Page

Chapter 3 - Field Books7 Field Book 1 All used pages will be clearly numbered on the upper right corner on each RIGHT hand page. (There are approximately 80 pages to the standard field book.) 2 pages open After Indexing

Chapter 3 - Field Books8 Field Book When recording data use a 2H or 3H pencil; never use a pencil soft enough to blur. The date, weather conditions, and the names of the field party shall be shown on the Field Book page at the beginning of each days notes. 6 Date Weather Names in Field Party Activity

Chapter 3 - Field Books10 Field Books Field notes shall be entered directly into the field books at the time & place the work is originally done. Keeping notes on loose-leaf pages or scratch pads and transferring them to field books back at the office is PROHIBITED.

Chapter 3 - Field Books11 Field Books When practical, record all notes for one item in the same book and at the same place in the book. Keep the measurements and calculations for Federal-Aid participating and non- participating items separated in field books. Final Measure

Chapter 3 - Field Books12 Field Books When more than one job (State or Federal) is constructed under the same contract, –Separate field books shall be kept for each job and the measurements and other data shall be kept separate for each job.

Chapter 3 - Field Books13 Field Books Field records for projects let under separate contracts shall NEVER be recorded in the same field book. Field books shall contain only the records related to a single contract.

Chapter 3 - Field Books14 Made a Mistake? DO NOT MAKE ERASURES OF ANY NOTES

Chapter 3 - Field Books15 Made a Mistake? Corrections are made by drawing a SINGLE line through the error and inserting the correct data. Initial and date all corrections.

Chapter 3 - Field Books16 Made a Mistake? Sta. (+) H. I. (-) Elev. B.M. ORIGINAL ROADWAY CROSS SECTS. STA TO B.M. # Begin Project July 12, 2005 Cloudy & Cool For Description See N B # Pg I. B. TIRRED I. SEAY Y. U. PROP DC 5/12/05 5.4
