World Bank, Jamaica and St. Kitts

Right now we are focusing on in LAC Social Development:  Analytical work, in particular, we are carrying out a Regional Study on Crime and Violence for the Latin American and the Caribbean Region. We have been using data from:  Violence Observatories in different LAC countries, Administrative data (Police and Public Health Sources), as well as victimization and perception surveys. The agenda is becoming a stand alone agenda within the LAC region

 Working together with the countries to guarantee the quality of data  Looking at indicators that go beyond homicide rates  Participation can help with the standardization of the definitions and the quality of data produced in the region in addition to producing analytical work to support policy action

 This is why it is important to collaborate with the countries in the region to guarantee the quality and the validity of the data  In the near future we would like to collaborate with the countries to strengthen their data collection, in particular working with national observatories of violence bringing both resources and technical cooperation  Expand funding to provide technical assistance in data collection

The WB needs to: - E xpand its priorities to include all aspects of public security as part of the development agenda. - Be more rigorous in guiding policies concerning citizen security - Engage in dialogue with the countries to provide viable solutions for citizen security
