Woodgate Primary School Happy, Hardworking, Successful This is who we are; this is what we stand for.

Pride in the badge The tree has firm roots. The strong trunk provides stability. Many branches symbolising a wide variety of opportunities, different ways to succeed. Pupils are the individual leaves, each one special. The gate offers an open welcome… …but it also provides security. Above all, this is the symbol of a gateway to a better future.

Our School Code At Woodgate we respect each other's age, abilities, disabilities, gender, race, religion, gender identity and sexual orientation. Our school welcomes everyone. Everyone must welcome and celebrate all others in our school and treat them equally and fairly.

Our values underpin all we do

What are values? Values are the principles that drive our behaviour. They influence our actions and attitudes. They are our framework for living. They influence our relationship with ourselves and others. Like riding a bike, values are learned through a combination of practice and instruction. At Woodgate, pupils learn what values are, how to recognise them, and how people react to them, equipping them with social skills and emotional intelligence. Our values incorporate and complement what The Government set out in its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, which were reiterated in Our values are underpinned by the UN Convention on the Rights of The Child.

Respect Respect is treating other people, places and things the way you want to be treated. You can show respect by listening to someone without interrupting. Be polite and always use your manners. Always be truthful. If you give respect, you’ll earn it back. MUTUAL RESPECT (BRITISH VALUES) The school community agrees that RESPECT is our most important value. School furthers tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling pupils to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures; to understand that each individual is unique; and to recognise and explore our individual differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment.

Honesty Honesty is being truthful to yourself and others. When you are honest, you feel clear inside. Honesty is saying what really happened. An honest person is someone you can trust. If you’re honest with yourself, you can accept you’ve made mistakes and will try and put them right.

Tolerance Tolerance is accepting yourself and others and appreciating difference. You are unique and have something valuable to offer and share. Tolerance is accepting yourself, even when you’ve made a mistake. Tolerance is accepting others, even when they’ve made mistakes too. Tolerance underpins our school code.

Empathy Empathy means understanding what another person is going through and being there for them. Empathy is reaching out to someone, understanding how they’re feeling and wanting to help. It means ‘putting yourself in their shoes’ and seeing things from their point of view. It is linked with kindness, caring, love and friendship.

Cooperation Cooperation is everyone helping to get something done, to achieve the same goal. When you are cooperative, you listen to everyone’s point of view and don’t make unfair judgements. Cooperating means knowing what is needed. Sometimes your idea is needed, sometimes you need to let go of your idea. You can’t cooperate without mutual respect.

Responsibility Responsibility is doing your job and trying your best. It’s doing your share of the work. Responsibility is caring and being fair. It’s taking care of things. Responsibility is helping others when they need help. Responsibility is helping to make a better world.

Fairness Fairness does not mean that everyone gets the same thing; fairness means that everyone gets what they need. Fairness is giving people what they need when they need it. It means playing by the rules, taking turns and sharing, and giving everybody a fair chance.

Happiness Happiness is feeling good about yourself and having that same emotion for the people around you. You don't find happiness, you make it. What you choose to do and say affects others. It can hurt them or it can make them happy. Doing good things and having good wishes makes people happy.

Courage Courage is persevering if things don't turn out as they should. Courage is having the confidence to stand up to someone or for something you believe in. Courage is choosing to do the right thing, even when your friends might not be.

Democracy At Woodgate we encourage respect for democracy and support participation in democratic processes. Democracy is the basis on which the law is made and applied in Britain. Through the democratic process, citizens can influence decision- making in Britain. Our School Council is one way in which the democratic process is modelled in school.

The Rule of Law & Woodgate Primary School Rules Different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, but all people living in Britain are subject to its laws. It is sometimes called the ‘law of the land’ and everyone must live by it. It is the same with our school code and school rules. The rule of law protects people, ensures wellbeing and keeps them safe. Keep hands, feet and other objects to yourself. Respect people’s boundaries. If they ask you to stop, you must stop. Games can sometimes get out of hand, so people have the right to say stop. It is never okay to hurt someone on purpose. If someone is making you sad or angry ask them to stop and tell an adult. If you have been part of a problem, be honest about it. Cooperate with putting things right. You are always responsible for the choices you make – nobody can make you hurt someone else. Follow instructions straight away. Respect means listening to adults and doing what you’ve been asked the first time, every time. When you follow instructions you are cooperating so that everyone can get on and learn. This is how we all achieve our goals together. You have a responsibility to try your best in everything. If you follow instructions you are playing fairly and giving everyone a fair chance. Walk sensibly and quietly around school. Woodgate is a safe and happy place. Respect that others are working and follow the instructions. Keep yourself and others safe by taking care inside the building. You have a responsibility to set a good example to others when you walk around the school. Show that you can cooperate and be trusted all the time. Work and talk quietly without wasting time. We are here to learn together. Manage your distractions and have the courage persevere when things get tough. Ask for help in the right way. Be fair and allow others to get on with their work and do their best. Show that you can be responsible by following the teachers instructions. Call everyone by their own name. What you say and how you say it can affect other people’s happiness. It is never okay to call people names, say unkind things about them or to use offensive language. You have a right to ask people to stop and a responsibility to tell an adult when someone doesn’t. At Woodgate we celebrate our differences and accept everyone. The value of tolerance is very important and everyone is expected to follow our school code. In our society and in our school there are consequences for pupils who don’t follow the rules. It is important that everyone is kept safe and happy. It is also important that people who make bad choices get the chance to learn from their mistakes and improve. The consequence will be fair because it will be thought through to make sure both things happen.

Individual Liberty This is often thought of as freedom. For example, in Britain, the freedom to choose and hold different faiths and beliefs is protected by the law. Choice is the key word. We encourage pupils to make choices within a safe and secure environment. We teach them how to make informed choices within acceptable boundaries. With their rights comes responsibilities. Pupils’ are free to exercise their rights and make choices with the rules of the school and the values listed previously. Rights and Responsibilities. Choices and Chances. Every day we encourage you to make choices, knowing you’re in a safe and supportive environment. We make sure you know, understand and exercise your rights and personal freedoms and show you how to do so safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. We give you the choice of learning activities and choice of challenge, of how to record, of participation in our extra- curricular clubs and opportunities. You choose which school meals to opt for and which equipment you will use at playtimes.
