What is Life? Ch. 2.1 Notes

What is Life? If you were asked to name some living things, or organisms, you might name yourself, a pet, and maybe some insects or plants. But you may not mention moss growing in a shady spot, mildew growing on bathroom tiles, or slime molds that oozed across lawns.

The Characteristics of Life Living things share important characteristics. All living things have a cellular organization, contain similar chemicals, use energy, respond to their surroundings, grow and develop, and reproduce.

Cellular Organization All organisms are made of small building blocks called cells. A cell is the basic unit of structure and function in an organism. Cells are so small that you need a microscope to see them.

Cellular Organization Organisms may be made of only one cell or of many cells. Unicellular means an organism has only 1 cell. Multicellular means an organisms has many cells that are specialized to do certain tasks such as muscle cells, brain cells, and blood cells.

The Chemicals of Life The cells of living things are composed of chemicals. The most abundant chemical in cells is water. Other chemicals include carbohydrates for energy, proteins and lipids for building materials, and nucleic acids – the genetic material that are the instructions of the cell.

Energy Use The cells of organisms use energy to do what living things must do, such as repairing injured parts. An organism’s cells are always hard at work!

Response to Surroundings All organisms respond to their surroundings. A change in an organism’s surroundings that causes the organism to react is called a stimulus. Stimuli can include changes in temperature, light, sound, etc. The organism’s reaction is called the response.

Growth and Development Living things also grow and develop. Growth is the process of becoming larger. Development is the process of change that occurs during an organism’s life to produce a more complex organism.

Reproduction Another characteristic of organisms is the ability to reproduce, or produce offspring that are similar to the parents. For example, robins lay eggs that develop into young robins that closely resemble their parents.
