Cells The Basic Unit of Life

Animal Cell

Parts of the Cell (Organelles) Nucleus – contain the genetic material (DNA) Nucleolus – makes ribosomes ER (Endoplasmic Reticulum) – produces horomones - there are 2 kinds: Rough and Smooth ER

Ribosomes – make protein, move from nucleolus to ER Golgi Apparatus – packages molecules to move around cell Vacuole – helps in cell digestion and releases wastes

Cell Membrane – holds the cell together - lets things move in and out of the cell Mitochandria – produces the cell’s energy - site of cellular respiration (breaking down glucose) Centriole – help the cell to divide

Plant Cell

Parts of a Plant Cell (Organelles) Most of the organelles are the same for both plant and animal cells, except for: Vacuole – takes up most of space in plant cell and collects water

Chloroplast – contains chloroplast (green) where photosynthesis takes place Cell wall – found only in plant cells protects cell and keeps its shape
