NextPrevious RJ: Student Accountability Restorative Justice challenges the assumption that punishment holds offenders accountable. To offending students, punishment is a passive experience, demanding little or no participation. While the teacher or administrator scolds, lectures, and imposes the punishment, the student remains silent, resents the authority figure, feels angry and perceives himself as the victim. The student does not think about the real victims of his/her offense of the other individuals who have been adversely affected by his actions. Doing things to an offending student merely alienates him/her. We must engage them in an active way to truly hold them accountale and to build positive relationships between the student and those affected by their behavior. This project seeks to hold offenders directly responsible to those affected through the use of the restorative justice processes (Mediation/Conferencing). This process will also seek to rebuild the sense of community that has been lost within the school culture. Back to Slide
