Trenches to Triples and Linked Data Lianne Smith Archives Services Manager and Project Lead King’s College London Archives

The rationale and context behind the project Preparation for the centenary of the start of the First World War – – –

The rationale and context behind the project Building upon work done in previous JISC-funded projects, Open Metadata Pathway and Step Change –

Trenches to Triples Aims: To create Linked Data entities for collection and item level descriptions in our First World War related catalogues using Alicat Demonstration of the feasibility of using the Alicat Linked Data tool with a cataloguing system other than CALM

Trenches to Triples Creation of API to share the data created using Alicat Adaption of catalogue front end for visualisation of Linked Data entities Creation of Linked Data First World War vocabulary of personal name, corporate name, place and subject terms, available for reuse by the archives sector Act as a case study of Linked Data adoption

Outcomes of the project Creation of First World War dataset and integration into AIM25-UKAT –Lessons learned in the creation of the dataset concerning identification of the level of granularity required and the amount of staff time which needs to be invested in preparation

Outcomes of the project Demonstration of the concept: Use of Alicat to add Linked Data markup to catalogues Adaption of catalogue front end to allow visualisation of Linked Data entities – particularly successful in the case of ‘places’

Next steps... More work on the front end visualisation Increasing the availability of more resources as Linked Data Ongoing collaboration from the LODLAM community in agreeing standards for Linked Data adoption Increasing understanding and training in the archives sector
