Thought for the Week W/C 25 th January 2016 Holocaust Memorial Day

On the 27 January, is Holocaust Memorial Day. It is the day for everyone to remember the millions of people killed in the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. On HMD we can honour the survivors of these regimes of hatred and challenge ourselves to use the lessons of their experience to inform our lives today

“Don’t stand by” is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day January 2016 marks the 71 st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Elie Wiesel was born in 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania, which is now part of Romania. He was 15 years old when he and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz. This poem is from the memoir he wrote about his experiences

Never Shall I Forget, from Night by Elie Wiesel Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith for ever. Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes. Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.

Who didn’t stand by? Sir Nicholas Winton In December 1938, Nicholas Winton, a 29 year old British stockbroker, had been due to go on a skiing holiday but instead decided to go to Prague to assist a friend who was trying to help Jewish refugees. Nicholas set up an office at a dining room table at his hotel in Prague before returning to London where he worked with relief organisations to set up the Czech Kindertransport. Eight trains left Czechoslovakia in 1939, saving hundreds of children. Nicholas rarely spoke about his efforts and it was not until his wife discovered a scrapbook containing information about the trains that they became properly known. He remained humble about what he had done for the rest of his life. Nicholas passed away on 1st July 2015 at the age of 106.

Why should we not stand by? dgc

HMD is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and to recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own, it’s a steady process which can begin if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented. We’re fortunate here in the UK; we are not at risk of genocide. However, discrimination has not ended, nor has the use of the language of hatred or exclusion. There is still much to do to create a safer future and HMD is an opportunity to start this process.

Competition The Humanities faculty will be running a competition. We would like you to create a piece of work that explains why we “Don’t Stand By” It can be in any form you want, but it could be a poem, a picture, a story, or a memorial. Hand it to your humanities teacher by Friday 6 th Feb There will be prizes!
