Remember the 10 Commandments

What does God want to impress on us by including both a threat and a promise in the conclusion to the commandments?

What is the threat that God attaches to his commandments? Romans 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness… anger

What is the threat that God attaches to his commandments? Romans 2:9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile… earthly troubles

What is the threat that God attaches to his commandments? Ezekiel 18:4 For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son— both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die. death

Key Point #1 When we disobey the commandments, God threatens to punish us with his anger, earthly troubles, death, and hell.

What should God’s threats lead us to do? Psalm 119:120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws. tremble in fear

What should God’s threats lead us to do? Psalm 119:80 May my heart be blameless toward your decrees, that I may not be put to shame. don’t disobey

Key Point #2 God’s threats should lead us to fear him and not to disobey him.

Why does God also attach a promise to his commandments? Luke 1:50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. mercy

Why does God also attach a promise to his commandments? Matthew 5:3-12

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Why does God also attach a promise to his commandments? Matthew 5:3-12 many blessings

So what does God want to impress on us by adding both a threat and a promise to his commandments? James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. perfectly God wants us to obey every commandment

Key Point #4 By adding a threat and a promise to his commandments, God impresses on us that he wants us to obey every one of his commandments perfectly.

Agree or Disagree? God doesn’t put people in hell; Satan does.

Evaluate… If you obey all of God’s commands in your life, you will never have any trouble during your life.

Show why this statement is true… A person who doesn’t want to do God’s will isn’t a Christian.
