Speaker-400 Johnny talks about sports nonstop. It would be fine, but he doesn’t even know what he’s talking about. While watching football, he screamed, “YEAH! HOME RUN!” The speaker barrier in this situation.

Listener-300 Your teacher uses terms you do not understand. You tune her out because you don’t know what she’s saying. The listener barrier in this situation.

Listener-400 Bob likes to talk. His best friend (you) likes to talk as well, but you never get the opportunity. You often try to squeeze in a word or two every few minutes or so, but he continues talking endlessly. The listener barrier in this situation.

Listener-500 Tom gets a bad grade in his Spanish test. He also just made weekend plans to go to Six Flags with his friends and is very excited for it. He is trying to listen to his Speech teacher, Mr. Mercer, who is throwing markers across the room (he gets very passionate about his work), but feels he is too distracted. The listener barrier(s) in this situation.

External-100 Situations in the environment that keep you from playing careful attention to the speaker.

External-200 You’re at the movies. Name three possible external barriers that could occur and disallow you to listen to the movie.

External-300 You’re performing in a play. The show is running smoothly except one person in the audience keeps using flash photography every time their child walks onstage. One way to avoid being distracted by this external barrier.

External-400 You are enjoying lunch with an old friend while Spiderman is saving the day just outside the restaurant. All of the commotion makes it difficult for you to focus on your friend talking. Name two possible solutions to your problem.
