Enhancing Implementation of the CEW Standards through the PA SAS (Standards Aligned Systems)

Bellringer Write a one sentence answer to the following question. What is the relationship between curriculum, instruction and student achievement?

Essential Questions 1.What is SAS and why is it important? 2.How can SAS support the implementation of the CEW Standards? 3.How do I access materials that support the CEW Standards on the SAS website?

What is the PA SAS Systems? The Pennsylvania Standards Aligned Systems (SAS) is a collaborative product of research and good practice that identifies six distinct elements which, if utilized together, will provide schools and districts with a common framework for continuous school and district enhancement and improvement.

Why do we need a Standards Aligned System in PA? To support districts with curriculum, instruction and assessment To provide professional development To ensure that students meet and/or exceed on the PA Standards. The SAS is designed keeping in mind that there are different types of districts with varying levels of need. It communicates the main concepts in content areas and taps in to Pa’s most valuable resource (teachers).

Standards Aligned Systems

Clear Standards Clear high standards that establish what all students need to know and be able to accomplish. CEW Standards will help students meet the demands of the 21st Century Workplace.

Fair Assessments Fair assessments aligned to the standards. Types of Assessment : Summative Formative Benchmark Diagnostic Authentic tasks and assessments in all content areas will allow students to “try on” careers regularly and throughout their school tenure.

Curriculum Framework A framework specifying Standards, Big Ideas, Concepts, and Competencies, Essential Questions, Vocabulary, and Exemplars in each subject area at each grade/course level. The Curriculum Framework will assist teachers in planning quality instruction for all content areas and will provide them with quick access to examples of superior performance- based tasks that can be used for instruction and assessment that will replicate real-life problems faced in the workplace.

Instruction Aligning instruction with standards involves identifying strategies that are best suited to help students achieve the expected performance levels. A key component of this section of the SAS system targets cooperative learning, a critical skill for success in the workplace.

Materials and Resources Materials that address the Standards and Curriculum Framework Units and Lesson Plans Multi-media resources This portion of the SAS will showcase instructional materials that represent a balance between concepts and competencies, applications and problem- solving. Materials available through this section will assist teachers in giving students the opportunity to become experts in applying what they are learning.

Interventions A safety net/intervention system that insures all students meet standards A graduated system of interventions within the regular classroom will ensure that students are provided with supports they need to succeed. As you work through your case study this week, you will be starting to develop a “safety net” structure for your students that will assist them in making sound career decisions.

Career Education and Work Curriculum Framework The mission of the Career Education and Work Academic Standards is to ensure that each student achieves and maintains a personally and professionally rewarding career journey in a diverse and changing world.

Maneuvering the SAS System Navigating the Curriculum Framework

Exploring SAS Using the provided guide sheet, spend 10 minutes exploring the SAS system. This activity will give you a sampling of materials that can help teachers implement the CEW Standards.

Revisiting the Essential Questions 1.What is SAS and why is it important? 2.How can SAS support implementation of the CEW Standard? 3.How do I access materials that support the CEW Standards on the SAS website?

3, 2, 1 Activity 3.What are 3 different areas of the SAS System that can help teachers implement the CEW Standards? 2.List 2 ways that the SAS System Curriculum Framework differs from your current district Curriculum Framework? 1.Suggest 1 way that the Standards Aligned System might be used as you develop a business plan for the implementation of the CEW Standards.
