Presentation transcript:

So many fonts, so much choice

More than 1000 fonts Just as an author struggles to find the right words, the graphic designer struggles to find the right typeface to match, support, or enhance the words.

1. Choose a font on 2. Download it 3. Go in C:\Windows\Fonts 4. File/Install New Font

Readability Not to be confused with legibility (not always easy to read) Important role of leading, tracking and line length

Voice No coincidence if letterforms are called as well characters Own identy Choose the right one to convey the right emotion

Color Some typefaces works better with some colors than others Impact leading, tracking …

Typeface is a set of characters (numbers, symbols, letters, marks ….) e.g: Arial, Verdana …. Font is a specific size and style of the typeface e.g: Verdana, 10pt, Bold

Serif: Times New Roman Sans-serif: Arial Symbols (Webdings):  Other alphabets:

Leading = interline spacing Tracking = intercharacter spacing Font Style: 4 main styles: Bold, Regular, Italic, Bold Italic Other styles: Black, Narrow… Size Caps, SmallCaps, Lower-case letters Orientation Wrapping Styles Effects

Generally, we avoid to use more than 2 different typefaces When you use 2 different typfaces, better to choose a Serif and a Sans-Serif Use contrast With style: Bold, italic…. Tracking contracted and expanded Neutral and flashy colors Don’t be « too much » Think about the appropriated style that match your creation (Corporate, minimalist, modern, old school…)
