VIIRS in McIDAS-V East Coast Power Outage Images produced by William Straka III

Overview SSEC/CIMSS A derecho moved from the Midwest to the Washington DC region on 6/29. The winds from the derecho caused massive power outages in West Virginia, Virginia and the Washington DC metropolitan area

VIIRS Day Night Band 28 June UTC (pre-derecho) SSEC/CIMSS

VIIRS 11  m (I05) 28 June UTC (pre-derecho) SSEC/CIMSS

VIIRS Day Night Band 30 June UTC (post-derecho) SSEC/CIMSS

VIIRS 11  m (I05) 30 June UTC (post-derecho) SSEC/CIMSS

VIIRS Day Night Band 1 July UTC (post-derecho) SSEC/CIMSS

VIIRS 11  m (I05) 1 July UTC (post-derecho) SSEC/CIMSS

Observations SSEC/CIMSS Both pre and post-derecho images were on days with a lack of cloud. One striking note is, while West Virginia is a lot darker, the Washington DC area has a quite a lack of lights from normal. But by 7/1, the lights in the DC metro area have recovered.
