1 Aim: How are Hurricanes different from large storms?
Do Now: Answer the following question in your notebook, what doe the rotation of this storm tell you about the pressure within the center?

2 Hurricanes (tropical storms)
Large, low pressure systems (cyclones) develop in the later summer and early fall. Hurricane Sandy Satellite Image

3 II. Development Begin to form 5 and 20 degrees north and south of the Equator. fueled by warm tropical waters which add a lot of moisture into the air.

4 Hurricanes have a very predictable life cycle which is categorized by wind speeds.
Tropical Disturbance Tropical Depression Tropical Storm Hurricane *Only until the wind speed reaches 74 mph is the storm considered a hurricane

5 III. Structure air sinks in the center called the eye, which is clear because of this sinking air. spiral bands of rain clouds extend out form the center.

6 IV. Movement counterclockwise rotation (low pressure)
they move west between 00 and 300N. their rotation carries them north above 300 . above 300N, they are carried by prevailing winds up the east coast of North America.

8 V. Damage and Destruction
storm surge is created by waves piling up on the coastline. intensity of hurricanes are measured using the Saffir-Simpson scale which categorizes hurricanes as 1-5 based on wind speed, storm surge and damage caused.
