Treboo-What? Ms. Stanton Pre-Calculus

Treboo-Shay… Yay!

What career involves trebuchets? War specialist, mathematician, statistician, scientist, ENGINEER Before we begin…. How do engineers’ minds work? How do they design things? How can we build the best product that is the most cost efficient? How will we become the best engineers?

Engineering Design Process

Step 1: Identify the Problem Students should state the challenge problem in their own words. What is the problem? What do we want to accomplish?

Step 2: Identify Criteria & Constraints Specify design requirement (criteria). What is goal? Who is the customer? What are the limitations?

Step 3: Brainstorm Possible Solutions What are the solutions? Research and investigation on the problem and the potential solutions. (Internet or other research – don’t reinvent the wheel)

Rules to Brainstorming These are rules all group members must follow!

Step 4: Generate Ideas Individually develop two or three ideas Create drawings that are labeled Make lists of materials you will need

Step 5: Explore Possibilities Discuss developed ideas with team members Select 2 or 3 ideas from the whole groups’ collection to discuss more deeply Pro/Cons of each of these 2/3 designs Be sure drawings tell materials and measurements

Step 6: Select an Approach As a collective group select the best design, which may incorporate multiple members’ ideas. Now it is time to select the best solution for further development. Create a plan to build.

Step 7: Build a Model Build a prototype and test it against your design objectives. Follow your plan and create it.

Step 8: Revise and Refine Examine and evaluate your prototypes or designs on the criteria and constraints. Talk about what works, what doesn’t and what could work better. Modify the design! Test it out again! Keep detailed records of designs, changes/modifications, and how the data changes.

Exit Slip Why do you think it’s important for an engineer to follow the Engineering Design Process for each project (i.e. engines, air planes, shoes, water bottles, etc.)?
