N5 Selective Question SQA 2014

Tips You need to evaluate a range of sources, detecting and explaining instances of exaggeration and/or selective use of facts, giving developed arguments. In order to achieve full marks candidates must show evidence that has been selected as it supports the view and evidence that has been selected as it opposes the view. An answer which deals with only one side of the explanation should be awarded a maximum of 6 marks. If a response simply provides source evidence without some indication of which side it supports or opposes then no marks should be given. If you think one of your paragraphs is weak then write an extra one. But you really only need 3.

PROCESS TO HELP ANSWER SELECTIVE QUESTIONS 1. Read the instructions carefully. Then read the point of view at the bottom of the source. 2. Read through the sources and use one colour to highlight what evidence supports this statement and use another colour to highlight what evidence does not support this point of view. 3. Your first heading is – EVIDENCE WHICH SUPPORTS THE POINT OF VIEW 4. Then you need to identify evidence that supports his point of view. 5. Your second heading is – EVIDENCE WHICH DOES NOT SUPPORT THE POINT OF VIEW. 6. You need to identify evidence that doesn’t support his point of view. 7. Your third heading is - CONCLUSION 8.how you know the person is or is not being selective. If you do not do this, this maximum you can gain is 6 marks.

EVIDENCE WHICH SUPPORTS THE POINT OF VIEW Sophie Wilson is not selective in her view “There have been great improvements in the UK’s health in the last 10 years.” Sophie’s view is supported, not selective by Source 1 which shows “people are making better lifestyles choices.” And by Source 2 that shows the number of people smoking has decreased by 5% for both men and women in the last 10 years. This has also led to a decrease in the number of heart attacks associated with smoking. This shows that the UK’s health has improved. Sophie’s view is shown to be not selective by Source 1 which shows, “the Government has worked hard to improve the health of the nation” and Source 3 shows, “by passing laws banning smoking in public places”. This proves the government has made an effort to improve health in the last 10 years.

EVIDENCE WHICH DOES NOT SUPPORT THE POINT OF VIEW Sophie’s view is shown to be selective as source 3 shows, “Approximately one in five adults continue to smoke in the UK” and source 2 shows with male smoking rates constantly higher than female rates. This shows that despite the smoking ban people are still making the choice to damage their health.
