Jesus Christ Week 13

Jesus Christ: the Bridge

What are the Gospels? Which books are called the Gospels? Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are collectively called the Gospels. What does the word “gospel” mean? The word “gospel” comes from an Old English word meaning “good news”. The Gospel is the good news of Jesus’ defeat of death so that we might have hope of eternal life if we accept His grace through faith.

The Gospels Written accounts of Jesus’ life inspired by the Holy Spirit Written years after Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke They have much in common and differ significantly from the Gospel of John. Each Gospel presents a different aspect of Jesus. Matthew presents Him as Israel's King; Mark as God's Servant; Luke as God's Ideal Man. John presents Him as God himself.

The Gospels  Jesus’ birth and early life  The temptation of Jesus  Jesus performs miracles

The temptation of Jesus After being baptized, Jesus fasted for forty days and nights in the Judaean Desert. During this time, the devil appeared to Jesus and tempted him. Three temptations: Satan: “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread”. Jesus: “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”. Satan (standing on the highest point of a temple): “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down.” Jesus: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test”. Satan: “All this I will give you, if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus: “Away from me, Satan! Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only”.
