Andersen Hans Christian Was born on April 2, 1805 Odense’s, a small town on the island of Fyn. The house where the writer was born

Mоther: Anna Mari. It was the laundress from a poor family. Father: Hans Christiaan. He was а poor shoemaker and the carpenter. He dreamed about studying and travelling. His father liked to make toys of improvised materials, to read the fairy tales to the son and play scenes from works of the Danish playwright Golberg.

In the early childhood Hans Christian was a child with big blue eyes who sat in the corner and played his favorite game — a puppet theater. Though Andersen's childhood involved writing, he studied at school not very well, and till the end of his life he wrote with some mistakes.

In 1819 there arrived a theater to Odense and Andersen received a role of the driver. He understood that theater was his calling. Having earned some money for the first time in his life, Andersen bought boots and left home. He went to Copenhagen to look for happiness and success on the stage.

Andersen was a very tall man. He was thin and round-shouldered. The storyteller had nasty character and constantly disturbed of something. He was afraid of robberies, dogs and passport loss. Also, he was afraid to be lost on fire therefore he always carried a rope with him that during a fire to get out through a window.

All his life Andersen suffered from a toothache. He was afraid of poisoning. Once when the Scandinavian children presented him a gift for their favorite storyteller and sent him the biggest box of chocolates in the world, he refused to take the gift in horror and sent it to the nieces.

Quite recently in Denmark the still unknown Andersen's fairy tale called «Grease candle» was found. The manuscript was found among the papers in archive of the Danish city of Odense by the local historian. Experts confirmed authenticity of work which, probably, was written by the known storyteller in his school days.

Every year on April 2, on the birthday of the writer, the International day of the children's book is celebrated around the world. Since 1956 the International council of the children's book awards Hans Christian Andersen's the Gold medal — the highest international award in modern literature. Since 1966 he is awarded for a contribution to children's literature.

The Monument to Andersen was put when he was alive, and he approved the project of the architect August Sobyu. Firstly, according to the project, he sat in a chair, surrounded by children but Andersen disliked the idea. «I and words could not tell in such atmosphere» — he told. Now one of the areas in Copenhagen is called in his honor. There is a monument there: the storyteller is sitting in a chair with the book in his hand.
