CONCLUDING YOUR DISSERTATION Conclusion, Proofreading, Revision, Editing, Style Sheet, References Section

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A CONCLUSION?  A summary  A re-statement of your thesis  New points of argument  Critical thinking  Quotations  Same points you find in the introduction

What is a conclusion?

Your conclusion should include:  A summary of your dissertation  Re-state what your dissertation aims to achieve  Summarise your findings and results  Have you proved or disproved your hypothesis?  Have you answered your research questions?

Your conclusion should include:  State the importance of your findings  Relate your findings to your area of study (what contributions you can make to it?)  Limitations and further studies

REVISION, PROOFREADING, EDITING  REVISION - OVERALL ORGANISATION:  Is each section in the right place to fulfil your purpose?  Have you drawn connections between the sections?  Would your reader know the answer to the question you raised in the introduction when reading the conclusion?

 Read passages aloud  Use short sentences (emphasis)  Spelling (typos) REVISION, PROOFREADING, EDITING

 Vocabulary (register, pronouns, hedging and boosting)  Difficult structures (sentences length, parallel constructions)  Punctuation and spelling

 Have I followed the conventions for citations? (e.g. footnotes, endnotes, in-line citations)  Plagiarism: Have I included the source of every idea I’ve quoted, paraphrased or summarized?  Is my thesis statement clear and concise? REVISION, PROOFREADING, EDITING

 Have I included counterarguments?  Check the different parts of your dissertation and its contents  Paragraph structure
