What factors do we use in weighing the order of priorities in a dilemma that pits a professional code of ethics against a societal moral code of ethics?

The Scenario  It is closing time.  You notice a flash drive left behind.  You do what you think is the right thing—pop it in to find out who it belongs to so you can return it.  The dilemma—it is unnamed AND contains pornographic images.

Questions for discussion As you discuss the following questions use the next two slides (ALA code of ethics and Richard Rubin’s decision making questions) to weigh out your answers.  What decision would you make?  What factors influenced your decision?  What factors could potentially alter your decision?  How would your decision change if the flash drive had included the owner’s name?  What would you do if your superior told you to just leave it alone and do nothing?  Should you or should you not have opened the drive in the first place? Why or why not?

We provide the highest level of service to all library users through appropriate and usefully organized resources; equitable service policies; equitable access; and accurate, unbiased, and courteous responses to all requests. We uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist all efforts to censor library resources. We protect each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted. We respect intellectual property rights and advocate balance between the interests of information users and rights holders. We treat co-workers and other colleagues with respect, fairness, and good faith, and advocate conditions of employment that safeguard the rights and welfare of all employees of our institutions. We do not advance private interests at the expense of library users, colleagues, or our employing institutions. We distinguish between our personal convictions and professional duties and do not allow our personal beliefs to interfere with fair representation of the aims of our institutions or the provision of access to their information resources. We strive for excellence in the profession by maintaining and enhancing our own knowledge and skills, by encouraging the professional development of co-workers, and by fostering the aspirations of potential members of the profession.

To what extent is the survival of the organization threatened? To what extent will the purpose of the organization be harmed? To what extent is the organization or employee socially responsible or irresponsible when acting in a particular manner? To what extent are the actions of the organization or individuals acting in its behalf harmful or benefiting other individuals, organizations, or the profession? From Richard E. Rubin, 2010, Foundations of Library & Information Science, 3 rd ed., Neal-Schuman, pg. 419
