Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal Chapter 6: Lesson 4 p

Hoover’s Thoughts Herbert Hoover believed the Great Depression was a temporary problem. Didn’t want the government to help out because he thought people would depend on the government too much. In the 1930s, people looked to the government for help because things were so bad President didn’t want to help, so people disliked him.

Election of 1932 Democrats nominated Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), former gov. of New York. Republicans nominated Herbert Hoover again. Former president Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt was FDR’s cousin. Who do you predict won? Why?

Polio and FDR FDR was the father of 5 children, and was 39 years old in Earlier one summer day he had gone swimming, sailing, and jogging and noticed that his legs felt tired. He woke up the next day unable to walk. Diagnosed with a disease called Polio, which meant he would never again walk without the use of heavy leg braces.

Polio and Politics Became a senator before he was sick. Thought polio might end his political career. Worked hard to stay healthy, despite the fact that he stayed in a wheelchair. Was elected president despite the fact that he couldn’t walk.

“Happy Days are Here Again” Song “Happy Days are Here Again” became Roosevelt’s theme. Visited many people on the road to victory, promising the American people a “New Deal.” Hoover said: the worst of the Depression is over. Roosevelt won by a LANDSLIDE.

The New Deal Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Started trying to help people immediately. In his first “Hundred Days” in office, he kept his promise of a New Deal by starting many programs to help thousands of American citizens.

The first Hundred Days

Helping Banks People were afraid to use banks—what if the money they put in wasn’t there when they wanted to take it out? Roosevelt knew he had to get people to trust banks again. Closed all banks for several days. Audited all banks—reviewed all of their records to make sure they were safe and correct. Only let the strongest banks re-open.

The FDIC FDR created the FDIC—Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. This corporation protected people’s money. If the bank failed for any reason, the government promised to pay back all the money the bank lost—up to $100,000 per depositor. We still use this today. The money you put in the bank is still protected by the government.

The New Deal in Tennessee One New Deal program helped Tennessee farmers. Called the AAA—Agricultural Adjustment Act Government paid farmers in Tennessee $4.5 million to plant fewer acres of crops. How could planting FEWER acres of crops help TN farmers?

The TVA: Tennessee Valley Authority Largest New Deal program in TN. Workers built dams on the Tennessee River tributaries to produce electricity & control flooding. Bad News: In order to develop this area, the government forced people living in that area to move. Good News: TVA created thousands of well-paying jobs; less flooding damage and river is now easier to travel.
