5 relief 1. Franklin Roosevelt told Americans in his first fireside chat that it was safer to keep your money in a reopened bank than under your mattress. The three goals of the bills FDR sent to Congress were to bring relief to the needy, recovery for agriculture and industry, and reforms to the economy. His approach to fighting the Depression was to use the power of the federal government aggressively.

6 2. FDR’s comprehensive program to fight the Great Depression was called the New Deal. His brain trust studied the nation’s problems and recommended solutions. Roosevelt In this quotation, Roosevelt is stressing that Government should help the unemployed and retirees.

12 6. The Second New Deal focused on social reform. The Social Security Act was the New Deal law that provided aid to the unemployed, retirement benefits, and assistance to the disabled.

14 7. Roosevelt asked Congress to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court in 1937 and this action damaged his popularity with the American people. Republicans and Democrats said his court-packing bill would interfere with the system of “checks and balances.”
