Structures, Strategies and Compositions Lesson 10

Today we will… learn how to make defensive practices more game-like. learn how to adapt half court man-to-man depending on the performance demands. complete some exam type questions in preparation for the Progress Check next week.

Developing Half Court Man-to-Man 1v1 2v2 3v3 Shell Drill (passive) Shell Drill (active defenders) 5v5 half court game

Shell Drill Offensive players spread round the key in a horseshoe shape. Defensive players match up with offensive players. Depending on where the ball is in comparison to the defenders, they should be fulfilling one of the three defensive roles. To show they know their position, players should call it out e.g. ‘ball, ball, ball’.

How can we make the ‘Shell Drill’ more game like? Remember we are trying to develop our defending!

Shell Drill cont. The above practice can be developed by the teacher calling “live” at any point during the practice. This allows the attacking team the opportunity to score, making the practice more game-like.

Making it more gamelike… The practice can move into a half court 5 v 5 game with fully active attackers.

Homework marking You will now be issued someone else's homework Please read it twice Decide if it is worth a green, amber or Red face and then bullet point any parts it is missing. If it is perfect work, write the strengths down. Pass it back

Why would you adapt a strategy? Winning? Losing? Other team changes their tactics? Injury?

Adapting Half Court Man-to-Man Defence How might you change your defensive strategy if you were losing? Play Full Court Man-to-Man defence. Why would you play this strategy? Place greater pressure on the opposition to force an error or steel the ball. regain possession/ score quicker.

Adapting Half Court Man-to-Man Defence Would you change to Full Court Man-to- Man if you were losing at the beginning of the game? No. Why not? Too tiring and might leave yourself open to conceding even more baskets.

When and how would you adapt your defensive strategy? If you are losing with only a couple of minutes to play you would change your defensive strategy from Half Court Man-to- Man to Full Court Man-to-Man.

Why was Full Court more effective? By changing to Full Court Man-to-Man you place greater pressure on the opposing team. This can lead to a quick steal or turn over higher up the court and an easy basket.

Homework- Mind Map Create a Mind Map of everything you can remember from Structures, Strategies and Compositions. Include both the fast break and half court man-to-man.

Example Mind Map BASKETBALL Fast Break Attack Half Court Man-to-Man Defence Positions C F PG Positions Strengths

Next week… Progress Check – this is for you to see how well you are doing and for me to see how well I am teaching the course. There will be questions on both the Fast Break and Half Court Man-to-Man. The questions are very similar to what your homework questions have been. Use your notes to study. All the information is in there!!
