Using Model Schools Days Effectively Technology Leaders for the 21 st Century May 16, 2008

CSLO/Model Schools Statement of Purpose Through interdistrict collaboration, teachers will engage in classroom practices which integrate New York State Learning Standards, new assessments and technology to achieve higher student achievement.

What do I get for my $$$$ Hardware aide Software aide Substitute reimbursement Flexible staff development options Regional Days **bonus days** A group of trained experts and a dynamic knowledge base of information relating to all aspects of educational technology Savings over vendor provided training (i.e. Achieve, Breakthrough, Smart, RM Math) Collaboration with other districts on best practices - TIF

6360 – CSLO Regional Activities Each building sends 2 teachers to one of the following regionally-delivered technology related programs: –3 day regional workshops –TIF Technology Integrators Forum –Instructional Technology Partners Program

6368 – Model Schools Activities Without Integrated Learning System (ILS): 4 days (per building) of customized technology integration workshops for teachers only With ILS: 10 days of ILS support and alignment with district curriculum Option after 3 years – 6 days of ILS support Can choose other technology integration in lieu or addition to ILS support

Planning Strategies Pick from the menu Themes Grade Level/Subject area initiative Supt. Conference days Summer training Integrated lessons Push in opportunities Partner with IRT (Instructional Resource Team)

Customize, Customize, Customize Summer After School Push-In Out of District Half Day Full Day Subs - Aidable Use Prep Periods Conference Day Design to meet your needs Small group One-on-One Teacher Consulting Large group

Planning Examples Conference day to train a building Technology to support special education Websites Training for a grant Partner with another initiative Support specific programs Support specific grade level or curriculum initiatives

Time Frame Use the spring to identify your goals and needs for the following year Attend the BOCES information session in May Meet with your planner – the earlier the better! Before summer break – identify TIF participants and Regional Workshop participants

Tips Start planning early Build relationships with your planner and trainer(s) Don’t be afraid to ask for customized courses to meet your objectives Encourage administrators to “pop-in” on training sessions Half-day sessions can double the number that get training Two half day sessions a week or two apart work well

More Tips Don’t be afraid to address issues that come up – survey participants Don’t forget to include administrators Effective advertising / communication Sometimes you need to “target” individuals or groups Monitor signups and sub situations so you can cancel if necessary – 1 week notice required DONT WASTE YOUR DAYS!!! Tap into Regional Days for additional “free” opportunities

I just can’t get subs! Use BOCES trainers as: Resource mentor to push in Have trainers available during lunch and planning periods Offer training after school Summer workshops Last resort….Saturdays

What’s New in One Day Workshops Targeted to specific grade/topic/subject areas Helps when there are individuals or small groups that need training Schedule available NOW! District does not get charged a Model Schools day until FIVE teachers have attended sessions.**** Stay tuned for location announcements

Added “Perks” Other “free” training opportunities IEP Direct / RTIm Direct Web training – SchoolWires Team Notes Training Student Management Systems Literacy Programs Data Warehouse / Data Mentor help Don’t be afraid to call and ask!
