The Governors
The Role of the Governing Body Provide a long term plan for the school rather than being involved in the day to day running of the school For example, by: – Establishing a vision for the school – Setting the purpose and aims of the school – Approving and monitoring school policies – Appointing and performance managing the head teacher – Setting targets – Providing the budget and staffing to help school meet those targets
The Role of the Governing Body continued Monitor and evaluate the work of the school For example, by reviewing: – the performance of the head teacher – the effectiveness of the policy framework – progress towards targets – the effectiveness of the school improvement strategy Or by responding to reports such as Ofsted:. January 2014:A good school with outstandingbehaviour, outstanding progress inmaths, some outstandingleadership and the proportion ofoutstanding teaching growing inthis rapidly improving school.
The Role of the Governing Body continued Hold the head teacher to account for the performance of the school and ensure that parents and children are: – involved – consulted – informed as and when appropriate
We do all this by: Offering support Providing challenge Meeting as a full governing body 4 or 5 times a year Meeting in subcommittees 3 times a year: – Staffing and Curriculum – Finance, Buildings and Grounds – spin off Pay Committee Attending training and briefing sessions
…and… Getting into school: – spend time with the children – see the results of our decisions Being Class Governors Being Subject Governors Attending parents’ evenings Producing a termly newsletter Having a Governor notice board
Why do we do this? To give something back to the community To work with all involved with the school to ensure that it delivers a good quality education so that every child: – achieves the best they can – is confident and happy
