Newhaven College Middle School Garden Planted & designed by staff and students

Our School Independent, Low Socio Economic, low fee paying SES students Relocating to a new 82 hectare campus Many gardens to be constructed Donation of time and money from parents and community groups integral to our gardens

Courtyard The courtyard was developed and enhanced with student decorated umbrellas for shade, but it was the space beyond that needed more gardens. The courtyard was the only area with plants around the whole building.

Middle School Central Area Middle School students (Yrs 5 to 8) moved to their new building with enthusiasm, but there were no gardens, places sit or places to “just be” so the SRC along with a dedicated teacher made plans to develop this area into a recreational space.

Students planting The plans were drawn, community experts consulted and the planting began.

Planting occurred over the months and soon students were able to watch their plants grow

We also added artwork and sculptures to our garden and continue to plant around the school to create passive recreational areas and outdoor learning areas. In the background you can see the boardwalk that was added.

The art was in the gardens and on the walls. Year 9 community art fish project outside the Artroom overlooking the central garden.

In a windy landscape, the plants soon took root.

Students happily wok on the garden during their breaks and have taken great pride in thier work. This we believe is “speed mulching.”

Should we win the award, there are always new areas to plant. All funds will go to continue our planting program through the SRC, who have established an “adopt a tree fund” so that more plants can be purchased.
