BY FORCE AND WITHOUT CONSENT: A Five Year Overview of Sexual Violence in South Carolina

Methodology The report used crime incident report data from SLED. The time frame was 2005 through Sexual violence included rape, forcible sodomy, sexual assault with an object and forcible fondling.

Sexual Violence Offenses Rape was the most frequently reported sexual violence offense, followed by forcible fondling. There were 7 murders associated with sexual violence from 2005 through Kidnapping was the additional offense most often reported along with sexual violence.

Sexual Violence - Location 73% of attacks took place in a private residence. Attacks against children occurred most frequently at private residences followed by schools and roads/highways/ Attacks against adults occurred most frequently at private residences followed by roads/highways and hotels/motels.

Sexual Violence – Time of Day Time of victimization varied by victim age. Adult victimization increased during the evening hours, peaked at midnight and decreased during the early morning hours. Child victimization occurred most often at midnight, but also peaked at 8:00 AM, Noon and 3:00 PM.

Victims of Sexual Violence Women and girls made up 86.4% of sexual violence victims, the victimization rate among females was 6 times the rate among males. Children comprised 62% of sexual violence victims, the child victimization was 5.4 times the adult rate.

Victims of Sexual Violence Girls from 15 to 17 years old had the highest victimization rate of any age/sex group. Although girls and young adult women had the highest victimization rates, boys were also an at risk population.

Victims of Sexual Violence 62.7% of sexual violence victims were White, however the victimization rate for Non-Whites was higher than for Whites. 3.3% of sexual violence victims were Hispanic. The victimization rate among Non-Hispanics was higher than the rate among Hispanics.

Victim/Offender Relationships Seven victim/offender relationship categories were defined for this report: ex-spouse, family, known, marital, romantic, strangers and unknown relationships. The leading category victim/offender relationship was known, followed by family, strangers, unknown relationships, marital and ex-spouse.

Victim/Offender Relationships & Victim Age Adults and children were most frequently victimized by someone they knew. Victimization by family members was the second most frequent situation among children but stranger victimization was infrequent. Victimization by strangers was the second most frequent situation among adults but family victimization was infrequent.

County Rankings Greenville County reported the most sexual violence victims, Dillon County had the highest sexual violence rate. Greenville County reported the most invasive sexual violence victims, Clarendon County had the highest invasive sexual victimization rate.

Each county has a three page profile consisting of sexual violence victimization trends and victim information during the 2005 to 2009 time period.

Key Findings All statewide indicators of sexual violence victimization declined from 2005 – Children, especially girls, were at a disproportionately high risk of sexual violent victimization. Victim age is a key factor in understanding sexual violence.

Key Findings Victim age is a key factor. Children constitute a majority of sexual violence victims and have higher victimization rates. Victimization of children and adults varies in terms of time, place and victim/offender relationship.
