What Does ‘Beautiful’ Look Like? How the Media Shapes our Beauty Ideals and Feelings of Self-Worth

Defining Beauty Brainstorm: What does BEAUTY mean to you? In your opinion, what makes someone BEAUTIFUL? Come up with a list and be prepared to explain your answers!

Female Beauty Statistics Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves ‘beautiful’ (up from 2% in 2004) Only 11% of girls globally are comfortable using the word ‘beautiful’ to describe themselves 72% of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful 6 in 10 girls stop doing what they love because they feel bad about their looks.

Male Beauty Statistics More than 4 in 5 men (80.7%) talk in ways that promote anxiety about their body image by referring to perceived flaws and imperfections, compared with 75% of women. Similarly, 38% of men say that they would sacrifice at least a year of their life in exchange for a perfect body – again, a higher proportion than women. 29% of men thought about their appearance at least five times a day. 23% of men said concerns about their appearance had deterred them from going to the gym.

When You See This Model, What Assumptions Do You Make About Who She Is? Truth vs. Fiction…

TED TALK: Cameron Russell “Looks aren’t everything. Believe me, I’m a model” Consider the illusions that are constructed by the media, and the reality behind them! Do not believe everything you see!

The Media Are Constructions of Reality How does Cameron Russell attempt to convince her audience that people’s perception does not always equate with reality? Do you believe what she says?

The Dove Campaign For REAL Beauty “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted”

Why Are We So Hard On Ourselves? Do we all have to look the same in order to be considered ‘beautiful’? Consider this! 80% of women agree that every woman has something about her that is beautiful but do not see their own beauty More than half (54%) of women globally agree that when it comes to how they look, they are their own worst beauty critic
