Secondary Curriculum Team Functional Skills June

Content V Skills? National Curriculum? NC levels? APP? Content? Assessment? PLTS Flexibility about the way you teach? …

Functional Skills enable students to: apply and adapt their knowledge to a range of contexts solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar situations gather, interpret and communicate information effectively and confidently

Two main aspects for you to plan: short term – existing diploma students long term – embedding within English, mathematics and ICT

Short term – existing diploma students Discuss on your tables – what is your provision for: diploma students in year 11? current year 10 on two year diploma course? current year 9 – are some doing a bridging unit?

Assessment not yet finalised Assessment Pilot version – if students do not pass, the resit will be on the final version – which might be different

Long Term - Embedding functionality Functionality is embedded in the Programmes of Study – delivering this is (was!) a legal requirement level 1 is in KS3 level 2 in GCSE schools engaged in new KS3 Frameworks are including functionality

New GCSEs include functionality this is not a difficult or new message for subject leaders BUT if functionality is not included, schools will see Maths, English and ICT results drop and this will affect %5A*- C inc Eng and Maths measure

Developing functional skills in: …11 other subjects See contents page Have a look at some of the KS3 and KS4 plans

Developing functional skills Discussion 1.How might you use these resources in your school? 2.The future: the content might be more prescribed and you will have more flexibility about the way you teach? What will you do?
