Agenda Quiz on speed and velocity Distance-Time Graphs Independent Practice Acceleration Notes

QUIZ 1.What is the formula for speed? 2.What is velocity? 3.Devin and his dad took a trip to Carowinds. They rode the Drop Zone and fell at a velocity of 10 m/s. If the ride took 6.5 seconds, what was the height of the ride? 4.Christian pushed a desk across the classroom. If he moved the desk 8 meters in 16 seconds, what was his speed? 5.Angelica was walking to electives. If she walked at a speed of 0.5 meters/second and it took her 90 seconds to get to class, what was the distance she traveled?

Distance – Time Graphs Plots the distance an object travels against time books/ml_sci_gr8/accessibility/ml_ sci_gr8/page_21.pdf books/ml_sci_gr8/accessibility/ml_ sci_gr8/page_21.pdf

Hints to remember… Movement can be seen as a rising line on the graph A flat, horizontal line shows when the speed is 0 The steeper the line, the faster the speed. Falling lines indicate decreasing speeds

Let’s practice together…

Independent Practice If you finish early, please complete the following problems on the back of your sheet. 1.Hailey and Josselyn walked to the McDonald’s 500 meters away to grab a bite to eat. If they walked at 0.5 m/s, how long would it take to walk there and back? 2.Vanessa took a road trip to check out the UNC-G campus. It took her 2 hours to arrive driving at an average speed of 50 miles/hour. What is the distance? 3.Draw a Venn Diagram comparing/contrasting SPEED and VELOCITY.

What is it? What can it tell us? Acceleration

Acceleration Speed and direction can change with time. As velocity changes as the object, changes direction, so can the acceleration. ACCELERATION is the rate that velocity (speed + direction) change over time.

Changes in Velocity

FORMULA FOR VELOCITY Occasionally you will see the mark “∆” placed in the formula ∆ is the symbol for change

elated Big Bang Theory Big Bang Theory

Exit Ticket—Answer in Complete Sentences What is a distance-time graph? What is acceleration? What is the symbol for change? How can velocity change? What is velocity?
