Internet Infrastructure Mapping the World Wide Web

Internet A collection of computer networks that communicate with each other using a common set of rules, called a protocol.

Packet Switching Data is broken into smaller pieces called packets before it is sent. Routers examine the packets and choose the best path for them.

Backbone Large transmission lines that carry data long distances.

TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) Defines how data is broken down into packets – reassembles packets at the receiving end. Internet Protocol (IP) Defines how data is routed over the Internet.

Data is broken into packets You send an to your friend. Router examines packets TCP puts your back together. Review

Tracert (trace route) command

Who Controls the Internet? Internet Society (ISOC) Controls all of the groups who organize the Internet. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Coordinates the assignment of Internet addresses and domain names.

Who Controls the Internet? World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Develops standards for the World Wide Web. Founded by the founder of the Web, Tim Berners-Lee in 1994.
