2. Protocols
Network protocols are a set of rules which control the communication between devices on a network.
If one computer transmits data, the receiving computer needs to know what the rules are.
Protocols make it possible for the computers to ‘talk’ to each other
Without these international standards, devices from different manufacturers wouldn’t be able to interact with each other across networks.

3. TCP/IP These are the most important protocols in network communication
They allow error free transmission of packets between two IP address on a WAN
TCP responsible for how devices connect – splitting data into packets and reassembling them
IP is responsible for packet switching (routing the data)

4. File Protocols
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) – error free transmission of packets between 2 IP address on a WAN
HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) – used to access websites and communicate with webservers
HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) – more secure version of http. All is encrypted
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) – access, edit and move files on a server using a client computer

5. Mail Protocols
SMTP – simple mail transfer protocol – sends mail to a mail server
POP (Post Office Protocol) – gets from a mail server
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) – used by clients to get mail from a mail server and to manage remote mail boxes. More advanced than pop

6. Layers Protocols are divided into layers
These are self contained groups of protocols that have similar functions
This helps break down network communication into manageable pieces where developers only have to concentrate on one layer (advantage 1)
It also forces manufacturers to make compatible hardware and software
