Humility “To make low” One of a meek and lowly disposition. Non-abrasive in dealing with others. “Strength under control!” The opposite of arrogance and pride Meekness, modesty, lowliness, a servant, etc.

Humility Moses, Numbers 12:3 John the Baptist, cf. John 1:35-37, 3:29-30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Jesus, Philippians 2:5-8, John 13:1-9 – washing the disciple's feet

Humility Matthew 5:3, “Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Humility Philippians 2:3-4, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

Humility Romans 12:3, “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” 1 Corinthians 13:4, “Love … does not parade itself, is not puffed up”

Humility 1 Peter 5:5-7, “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.’ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”

Humility Psalms 138:6, “Though the Lord is on high, yet He regards the lowly; but the proud He knows from afar.”

How to develop humility Realize that you are ALWAYS in the presence of God Be thankful Overcome worldliness, Matthew 19:16-22

How to develop humility Do something that will humble you – be a servant! (cf. 2 Corinthians 4:5-7, 1 Timothy 6:17-19) Associate with the humble, Romans 12:16

Contentment “To be sufficient, to be possessed of sufficient strength, to be strong, to be enough for a thing.” (Vine’s)

Contentment Satisfied, moderation, sufficient, enough. The opposite of covetousness or being dissatisfied. An attitude of mind. How you view your current state of affair!

Contentment Does NOT mean laziness or complacency. Laziness is refusal to act (Proverbs 6:9-11, 20:13, 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12, Hebrews 6:12) Complacency – Romans 12:11, Revelation 3:15-18, James 4:17

Contentment We live in a discontented world! Discontent leads to … jealousy, envy, debt, materialism, worldliness, bitterness, etc.

Contentment In whatever state I am - sufficient with what he has. Philippians 4:10-13 In whatever state I am - sufficient with what he has. “Not that I speak in regard to need.” WHEN needed – both in want AND abundance! Ecclesiastes 5:10

Contentment “godliness with contentment is great gain.” 1 Timothy 6:6-8 “godliness with contentment is great gain.” “We brought nothing into this world” … (1 John 2:17, Matthew 6:19-21) Content with food and clothing – Do we really need everything we have?

Contentment 1 Timothy 6:9-10, “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Contentment Hebrews 13:5 “Let your conduct be without covetousness. Be content with such things that you have.”

Contentment Matthew 16:26, “What profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Contentment Proverbs 30:7-9, “Give me neither poverty nor riches – Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or lest I be poor and steal, and profane the name of my God.”

Contentment Proverbs 15:16, “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure with trouble.”

Developing a content heart Contentment Developing a content heart It is something that is learned – Philippians 4:11-13 Count your blessings – give thanks – 1 Thessalonians 5:18 Realize what is really important

Developing a content heart Contentment Developing a content heart Learn to trust God and appreciate Him – Philippians 4:13 You CANNOT outdo God! Live within your means!
