Production Operations Management (POM) Notes

Production as an Economic Activity  The economy BEGINS with production.  4 Types of Production Businesses:  Producers  Extractors  Farmers  Manufacturers

Forms of Production Extraction & Cultivation Products obtained from nature Processing Changing or improving the form of a product Manufacturing Combines raw materials with processed goods into a finished product

Production Activities  Product Development  Research  Applied – studies existing products to develop and design improvements  Pure – done without a product in mind with the goal of finding a solution to a problem  Design  Design engineers select materials, build prototypes  Financial experts calculate cost and potential selling point

Manufacturing Procedures  The biggest challenge for manufactures is the production process.  Assembly can be designed in a variety of ways:  Teams  Assembly lines  Robots  Organizing the Work Area  Where are supplies located?  Where are employees located?  Where do finished products go?

Improving Manufacturing  Manufacturing is made up of a series of processes  Continuous Process Improvement  Increases quality of work by reducing errors, inefficiencies, and waste.

CPI, Six Sigma, Zero Defects, LEAN  Browse the internet for the systems of manufacturing improvement mentioned above.
