Inuit Carvings  Ivory A smooth and hard off white or cream and colored dentine that makes up most of the tusks of walruses and narwhals.

Inuit Carvings  Whale Bone Often found on the tundra and is sometimes hundreds of years old, Carved only when it is dry throughout.

Inuit Carvings  Soapstone A softer stone with a ‘Soapy’ feeling that has a variety of colors, most popular for Inuit carvings.

Inuit Carvings  Antler Carved when dry, antler from caribou, moose, etc. Are often used for carvings and finishing pieces like tools, tucks etc.

Inuit Carvings SSerpentine Stone varying in color from green to brown and black.

Inuit Carvings  Stone The word soapstone has been used to describe the raw material for carving in the Arctic. Soapstone is made of tale steatite and is very soft. Other stone found in the Arctic and used in carvings are silstone, argillite, dolomite, quartz and marble. Most Inuit carvings are made from light to dark or black serpentine-rich rocks that are correctly named serpentine. The second most common carvingstone is argillite. The different carvings from Arctic Bay and Sanikiluaq are made from argillite witch ranges from light green to almost black, often has a different grain and takes a beautiful polish.

Inuit Carvings  The Art of Carvings… Most of the carvings are small objects that represent animals and human figures. Polar bears, walrus, mother with child are some of the carvings that can be seen. There are some carvings that are really detailed. There are some carvings with beads. Carvers use hand tools to carve objects. People buy carvings for gifts or for house decorations. Inuit carvers are respected and there are now younger people carvings to make a living.
