2. Description
Most adult narwhals tends to be a dark gray or black color with white spots, while young ones are gray with no white patches and old ones are completely white.
The majority of narwhals with tusks are males, but females can grow small ones.
Their tusks are really overgrown teeth that stick out of a hole in the narwhals’ mouths.

3. Habitat
Narwhals tend to live in an arctic habitat, such as Baffin, Hudson Bay, Greenland, and Svalbard.
They live in polynyas, pools of open water surrounded by an iced-over environment.
These polynyas are like an icy oasis for the narwhals; they have plenty of food for the narwhals to eat like phytoplankton and copepods.

4. Behavior
Narwhals are one of only a few mammals that can recognize themselves in a mirror and can understand ideas.
They also use echolocation to navigate throughout the sea when they go too deep for light to travel.
The narwhals make a noise from their nasal cavity when using echo location. The echo then bounces off of an object and head back to the whale, telling it that there is something up ahead.

5. Tusks
Many narwhals have only one tusk, but some are known to have two.
The tusk is a giant tooth, but the entire anatomy of the tooth is inside out, with the sensitive pulp on the outside and the hard enamel on the inside.
Each tusk has nerves connected to it, helping the whale detect water pressure, temperature, and salinity.
Although the idea of having nerves on the outside of the tooth sounds painful, narwhals have been known to touch tusks.
The narwhal tusks are also the only known straight tusk in the world and can grow up to 9 feet.
