Celebrity Babies Combining Like Terms Activity

Today’s Goal At the end of today’s lesson, you will need to describe how to combine like terms.

5x -1 -3x -8y +7y-4x Write it in sum form 5x x + -8y + 7y + -4x What are the terms? 5x, -1, -3x, -8y, 7y, -4x Which terms are alike? Why? How can we combine the terms that are alike?

5x -1 -3x -8y +7y-4x WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO COMBINING LIKE TERMS? Step 1: Write it in sum form ex: 5x x + -8y + 7y + -4x

Try: -10x y – 6 +10x -5 Step 1: Write it in sum form -10x y x - 5

Try: y +25x -20y +17y – 16x Step 1: Write in sum form y + 25x + -20y + 17y + -16x

Celebrities make beautiful babies! The student hand out has 9 babies of celebrity couples. The only problem is we don’t know who the parents are! Visit the celebrities around the room and combine like terms to simplify the expressions. One person uses the calculator. One person writes on the whiteboard. HELP EACH OTHER. Switch every celebrity. When you find the correct response, put the celebrity name in the correct box. You will have to write the name in two separate boxes because each celebrity has two questions. Once you have completed all 9 questions, check your answers with a teacher. At the end, answer the reflection questions.
