The Serial Gospel The Tomb

1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, What is the gospel that Paul preached? What is the gospel that the Corinthians received? What is the gospel that was saving the Corinthians? What is the gospel that the Corinthians held fast?

Luke 23:46 (ESV) Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. Last time, we looked at the crucifixion and ended with Jesus dying on the dross.

Matt 27:54 (ESV) When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” Mark 15:39 (ESV) And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” Luke 23:47 (ESV) Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” The Son of God. This man was innocent. What were some things that would make the centurion say these things?

Luke 23:48 (ESV) And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. What was the consensus of the crowd that watched His crucifixion?

Matt 27:55-56 (ESV) There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. Mark 15:40-41 (ESV) There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. Luke 23:49 (ESV) And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things. The question was asked about who witnessed the crucifixion. Who is here?

Mark 14:47-50 (ESV) But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left him and fled. John 18:7-9 (ESV) So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” (John 17:12) Do you think any other apostles were there?

Confirmation of Jesus’ Death

John 19:31 (ESV) Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. Deut 21:22-23 (ESV) “And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance. The Romans liked to leave bodies on crosses for days until they were devoured by birds. Why didn’t the Jews want this?

Ex 12:16 (ESV) On the first day you shall hold a holy assembly, and on the seventh day a holy assembly. No work shall be done on those days. But what everyone needs to eat, that alone may be prepared by you. Controversy of the Day: If tomorrow is the Sabbath, what day is today?

Do you think the Jews requested the legs of Jesus to be broken so that He wouldn’t fulfill this prophecy and thus couldn’t be the Messiah?

John 19:32-33 (ESV) So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Why didn’t they break Jesus’ legs?

John 19:34-37 (ESV) But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” Who is the witness in v.35?

Ps 34:20 (ESV) He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Zechariah 12:10 (ESV) “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. *

Matt 27:57-58 (ESV) When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. Mark 15:42-45 (ESV) And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. Who are witnesses in these passages confirming that Jesus is dead?

Luke 23:50-52 (ESV) Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. John 19:38a (ESV) After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. Who was Joseph of Arimathea? What were his costs of discipleship?

Matt 27:59-60 (ESV) And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. Mark 15:46 (ESV) And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Luke 23:53-54 (ESV) Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid. 54 It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. Describe Jesus’ tomb.

John 19:38b-42 (ESV) So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. Describe Jesus’ tomb.

Matt 27:61 (ESV) Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb. Mark 15:47 (ESV) Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. Luke 23:55-56 (ESV) The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. Who were witnesses to Jesus’ burial?

Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard. On what day did the chief priests and Pharisees go to Pilate?

Do you think this sounds like he believes there is a chance Jesus will rise from the dead?

Luke 24:1 (ESV) But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. Mark 16:4 (ESV) And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. Luke 24:2 (ESV) And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, John 20:1b (ESV) and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. *

Matt 28:5-6 (ESV) But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. *

Mark 16:5a (ESV) And entering the tomb, Luke 24:3 (ESV) but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. *

Mark 16:5b (ESV) they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. Luke 24:4 (ESV) While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. *

Mark 16:6 (ESV) And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. Luke 24:5-8 (ESV) And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words, *

See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Mark 16:7-8 (ESV) But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Luke 24:9 (ESV) and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. *

John 20:2 (ESV) So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” *

Luke 24:9-11 (ESV) and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. *

Luke 24:12a (ESV) But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; John 20:3-5 (ESV) So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. *

Luke 24:12 (ESV) [Peter] stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened. John 20:6-7 (ESV) Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. *

John 20:8-10 (ESV) Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. *

Matt 28:11-15(ESV) While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day. *
